In Grok we don’t trust: academics assess Elon Musk’s AI-powered encyclopedia

Elon Musk recently launched Grokipedia, an AI-powered encyclopedia intended to rival Wikipedia and present "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth." However, early users and experts have raised serious concerns about its accuracy and ideological bias.

British historian Sir Richard Evans, an authority on the Third Reich, found numerous factual errors in his own Grokipedia entry, as well as in articles on other historical figures.

He noted that Grokipedia treats chatroom comments and unverified sources with the same weight as rigorous academic research.

This indiscriminate aggregation of information reflects a Silicon Valley mindset that values iterative knowledge and rapid updates over the careful, long-term scholarly process of building trust and verifying facts.

Critics also highlight Grokipedia’s apparent promotion of far-right viewpoints, such as describing Britain First as a "patriotic political party" and echoing Kremlin narratives on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The platform’s political slant aligns with Musk’s recent public statements supporting far-right figures and parties, raising concerns about political manipulation of knowledge.

Furthermore, many Grokipedia articles are directly copied from Wikipedia, despite Musk’s claim that his platform is superior.

Wikipedia’s parent organization emphasized its transparent editorial policies and volunteer oversight, contrasting with Grokipedia’s opaque AI-driven content generation.

Experts warn that an AI-generated encyclopedia controlled by a powerful individual risks spreading misinformation and ideological bias under the guise of authoritative knowledge.

The launch of Grokipedia spotlights the challenges of trusting AI-curated information and underscores the importance of transparency, editorial rigor, and diverse perspectives in preserving the integrity of shared knowledge.
